Which grade must I walk?
All grades of walk are open to any member although new members are normally asked to start with a C or D grade walk. New members wishing to begin with A or B grades should contact the walk grade coordinator for details. Members and visitors should be aware of the parameters for each grade of walk and ensure their level of fitness is appropriate to the likely conditions.

Can I walk more than one grade?
Certainly, you can attend any walk you wish. Members and visitors should be aware of the parameters for each grade of walk and ensure their level of fitness is appropriate to the likely conditions.

What equipment do I need?
A broad-brimmed hat is a must most of the year and sun screen in the warmer months. Many people find insect repellent very useful.

A small day pack will be essential as all walkers need to carry sufficient water for the walk plus some lunch and a snack for morning tea. Wet weather clothing and a first aid kit should also be carried. New members are issued with an Emergency Medical Information booklet when they join and this should also be carried – and filled out!

For A and B grade walks good boots with soles in good condition are required as the terrain may be rough. For C and D grade walks sneakers in good condition will probably be enough.

Which camps can I go on?
Any financial member can attend any camp. Major camps cater for all grades of walk, others may only offer one or two grades. Members should be aware of the parameters for the grades of walks offered and ensure their level of fitness is appropriate to the likely conditions. All camps are announced in the newsletter and registration is strictly on a first come first served basis, as the available places on some camps are limited.

What are the accommodation arrangements?
Most camps use the facilities of caravan parks. Members can use either their own tents, caravans or “on site” accommodation.

What costs are involved?
Costs vary from camp to camp. Obviously there is the travel cost to get there and cost of the site or cabin fee. Often members take some food and in most cases, supplies can be bought either from the closest town or the shop at the caravan park.

I do not have my own transport. How can I get to the campsites?
Travel to a camp is rarely organised by the camp organisers.  It may be possible to travel by public transport and get someone to pick you up. Otherwise sharing a vehicle is another option. In this case, you would expect to pay a fair share of the travel cost and depending on the owner, you may be asked to help with the driving.

How are the transport costs shared if I travel in other peoples’ vehicles?
If you share a vehicle to the camp the cost sharing is arranged by the individual travellers. Transport from the camp site to the individual walks is organised by the camp organisers using members’ cars. Drivers are reimbursed at a set rate per kilometre. Use of members’ cars is on an entirely voluntary basis.
