The 4WD’s are off

Following the successful Heysen Extension walk in 2009, the club organised a camp for eight walkers from the Heysen 8 Group to walk from Owieandana near Angepena to Terrapinna Waterhole in the northern Flinders, a distance of 128km. Again the walk was through isolated pastoral properties and followed little used tracks, sometimes posing difficult driving conditions for the support 4WD vehicles which were driven by volunteers. The walk took the group through Anzac Bore, Yankaninna, Taylor Bore, Idninha, Four Mile Well, North Well, Wheal Turner Mine, Yudnamutana Mine, Daly Bore, Greenhill Well, Valley Bore, Mount Fitton and Terrapinna Springs.

The support vehicles carried the group’s food supplies, camping gear and essential water supplies as there was no known reliable source of water over the length of the trip. Walks were scheduled for 6 days with a rest day at Yudnamutana after the third day of walking.

The group passed through historic copper mining areas such as the Wheal Turner mine and Yudnamutana mine. In the evenings they gathered around the camp fire reviewing the day’s activities, planning the next day’s walking and hearing stories about mining in the area from one of the drivers.
