Falls Creek 2024 B/C Camp Report

What is the collective noun for a group of bushwalkers? An endurance? A Congo line? A stomp? A soreness? A willingness? A slog? At our recent Falls Creek B/C camp, we definitely covered all of these sentiments on our walks, and had fun brainstorming other possibilities at our daily happy hour (officially named briefing).

Once again, Andrew and Elaine organised a brilliant camp with quiet efficiency and expertise. From the accommodation, to a wonderful variety of planned walks, to information sharing, and even organising the shared meal on the final night, we all felt well looked after.

Our daily destinations were usually the peaks around Falls Creek: Mt Nelse, Heathy Spur, Mt Jaithmathang, the Frying Pan spur, several of the ski runs and Mt McKay (which unfortunately we walked in a whiteout). As we reached these peaks, we could look out across the Bogong Range, Mt Feathertop, the Fainters and other peaks we had climbed, or were going to climb. By the end of the week, our geographical knowledge of the area had increased markedly! Many of the vistas also included looking down at the Rocky Valley Dam from different angles – a constant landmark for us. We followed many of the aqueducts which are prevalent throughout the area. These were created for the Snowy Hydro scheme and are quite extensive. They also sport brown trout which were fun to watch.

One of the highlights was visiting many of the huts scattered around the region: Wallace Hut was particularly rustic and interesting, built in the early days of cattle farming in the area. Fitzgerald, Kelly and Edmondson Huts were in the same vein, and the Tawonga Huts were so lovely we had morning tea and lunch there.

We were very fortunate with the weather, which was usually in the high teens – perfect for walking. There was a cool change with a night storm, luckily on our rest day, where the maximum temperature was 11 degrees!

Collectively, the group walked over 1000 kilometres, and climbed more than 35,000 metres! No wonder the hot showers and R&R at the end of each day were so welcome! There was always a plethora of delicious shared nibbles and drinks every night, and the shared kitchen was an inspiration of quick, easy and delicious meals. Often we would sit around playing games and solving word puzzles – what a champion team! It was such a lovely group of people which just added to a fantastic camp. Thank you to everyone for a great week.
