Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail 2024

Andrew and Elaine led a trip on the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Tour (KIWT).  Our group was made up of seasoned members – Jenny, John, Roger and Kathryn – joined by three members on their first camp – Catherine, Ann and Belinda.

Kathryn was on the previous KIWT adventure in the Spring of 2021, offering observations on the contrasts between the seasons and amount of growth along the trail.

The scars of the 2020 KI bushfires were still evident, with trees shedding their skins off the blackened outer layers, with glimpses of fresh clean skins underneath, and new growth continuing to blossom in shades of bright green, doubling in height (approx.) since the previous trip.

The trail took us past swamp lands, creeks, lagoons and waterholes – most were very dry and bringing their own beauty.

Some personal highlights during the 73.5km walk (as per Ann’s All Track app) included the wildlife sightings of Echidna, Sea Eagles, Black Swans and Seal pups frolicking in amongst rock pools, and enjoying the smells, sights and terrain underfoot of the different mini eco-systems as we steadfastly trod on.

Rain threatened as we approached Remarkable Rocks. However, the rain remarkably went around us, enabling us to enjoy five days of wonderful hiking conditions. The hike concluded at Hanson Bay where we enjoyed lunch, with some refreshing their feet, paddling in the water.

In the evenings we enjoyed nightly drinks and a reading by Andrew from a History of Kangaroo Island 1800 to 1836. The final night, Roger kindly shared a delicious meal of curries with us all, followed by a terrific trifle from Kathryn.

Thank you, Andrew & Elaine, for organising a very enjoyable trip.
