Proposed Tasmania Camp – March 2027

Attention A walkers.

Seeking walkers with overnight pack experience, for a camp in Tasmania

If you fit the requirements listed below please read on:
 Have experience in carrying full pack (min 15kg) on multi-day walk
 Have (or may have) necessary gear for tent camping in a cold environment (just
above freezing)
 Are fit to scramble up and down mountains
 Available for a week long camp within the two week period from 12 to 24 March
2027
(exact dates to be determined once participants are identified)

Itinerary
Day 0 (a night in Hobart)
– Fly in, purchase gas, stay overnight)
Day 1 (1st night camping)
– Travel from Hobart to Cynthia Bay
– Catch 12:15pm ferry to Narcissus Hut
– Full pack walk (9 km/ 3 hours) to Pine Valley Hut and set up tents for 3 nights
Day 2 (2nd night camping)
– Return day pack walk from Pine Valley Hut to the summit of Acropolis (6 km return/
5-6 hours/ Starting Elevation: Pine Valley Hut (≈ 600 m) Summit Elevation:
1,481 m)
Day 3 (3rd night camping)
– Return day pack walk from Pine Valley Hut to the Labyrinth (the lookout, Parthenon,
Lake Elysia (one way 6 km | 2 – 3 hrs | 429 m elevation gain) and the Pool of
Memories if time allows (one way 3km | 1 – 2 hrs | 249 m elevation gain)
Day 4 (1st night in Cynthia Bay or Derwent Bridge)
– Full pack walk back from Pine Valley Hut to Narcissus Hut (9 km/ 3 hours)
– Catch 13:15 ferry, arr in Cynthia Bay 14:00
– Clean up from camping, dinner out
Day 5 (2nd night in Cynthia Bay or Derwent Bridge)
– Day pack loop walk to Mt Rufus (19km/ 7 hour circuit, elevation: from 740
metres to 1416m )
Day 6 (a night in Hobart or catch a plane home)
– Travel from Cynthia Bay to Hobart

Estimated costs per person include:
– Jetstar has direct flights to Hobart but they fill up quickly, $300-$400 return
– An alternative is to catch the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Geelong to Devonport
and have access to your own vehicle while travelling in Tasmania (approx $1200
return with a cabin on board)
– Car(s) hire to go to Cynthia Bay and back to Hobart (just under $100pd) The car will
sit unused in Cynthia Bay for 5 nights but will still incur daily charges.
– An alternative to car hire is a regional bus service operating between the West
Coast and Hobart that stops in Derwent Bridge. The service operates every
Tuesday and Friday (excluding public holidays). It leaves Hobart at 8:15am and
arrives in Derwent Bridge at 11:30am ($7.20 concession/senior, $14.40 adult)

Walking from Derwent Bridge to Cynthia Bay is 7.6km (1h45min)
– It could be possible to arrange one of the Overland pick up buses to take people
without cars from Derwent Bridge to Cynthia Bay
– Lake St Clair ferry to Narcissus Hut (min $55pp one way or min $300 to hire the
ferry as a charter provided it is available).
– Accommodation options:
– At the Pine Valley Hut 3 nights in tents
– At Cynthia Bay  there are the following options: a cabin for $450 per night for
2, a bunk bed at a lodge for $75 per bed, an un-powered tent site for $45 per
night or free camping with no toilets is also available
– An alternative to staying in Cynthia Bay is Derwent Bridge where a chalet is
approx $300 per night for 2
